  Mawingo’s fourth calf!

Lewa's newest black rhino arrival.

Mawingo, the partially blind black rhino female, gave birth to her fourth calf a few weeks back. She was spotted with the calf and did surprise us. We were not expecting her to calf until later in the year.

The rangers kept a very close eye on her for the first few days. Due to the fact that she has problems raising her offspring because of her bad eyesight (the last calf was killed by a leopard) we decided to remove the calf from her and raise it by hand, just like we did with Omni.

The little female is doing very well and we have good hopes that she will make it. She is living at Jane and Ian’s with Melissa taking care of her until Jane returns. She has a keeper who looks after her and sleeps with her.

She is already feeding well and chasing the dogs!
