Tourism Advice for visitors to Lewa

5 March 2008
Following the completion of the political power sharing agreement between the PNU and ODM we see the country returning to normal and the tourism situation calming down with the Laikipia region being as safe as it ever was for tourists to visit and enjoy. Nairobi remains completely calm with no new restrictions on movement.

We hope that visitors and potential tourists will continue to come and indeed book holidays to Kenya at a time when the country sorely needs the support and revenue. Unfortunately the reduction in visitors has had a severe impact on not only tour operators but many, many people whose livelihood depended on the success of this sector.

31 January
There has been much in the press on the increased trouble in the Rift Valley and Nairobi. Although it has spread somewhat Lewa and Laikipia are still unaffected and the district very quiet. It is certainly safe enough for tourists who are not the target anyway. Nairobi is experiencing some difficulties and occasionally access is restricted, although more by police than rioters. However it does change from day to day and your operator will be best to advise you. Western government recommendations on travel restrictions do apply but only to affected areas.

Lewa is still receiving tourists although our bednights in January dropped by 30%.

Please do check with Lewa before changing any plans - we often have a more balanced view than the media.

Since the beginning of January there has been much attention paid by the media to Kenya and the situation following the December elections. Whilst there is a political crisis to be resolved and incidents have occurred which will affect travel the incidents have been very localised, and often exaggerated by the media coverage, we here in Laikipia have been unaffected.

There are government advisories published which place constraints on travel and even the validity of insurance policies. We can never override this advice. However, we have experienced few problems with our tourism operations; none here in Laikipia, which has not been touched by any problems, and very few in Nairobi. It is perfectly safe here on Lewa and problem in Nairobi have been limited in space and time.

For visitors to Lewa, arriving in Nairobi and either staying the night or catching a plane from Wilson you will receive advice from your ground handling agent whether you need to change your plans. At the time of writing there are no problems with movement around Nairobi except when the demonstrations are actually taking place (and then limited to Muthare slums or the very centre of town).

Flying or driving to Lewa in Laikipia is as safe as it ever has been.

There is a good website published by the US Embassy which gives up to date information on ground routes: http://nairobi.usembassy.gov Go to Kenyan Route Advisory

We will update our page regularly especially if the situation changes.

We have received some cancellations, but thankfully not many. We hope you will be able to continue planning your trip and enjoy your stay when you come!
